The Mosquito was also known affectionately as the "Mossie" to its crews. Originally conceived as an unarmed fast bomber, the Mosquito was adapted to roles including low to medium-altitude daytime tactical bomber, high-altitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber, intruder, maritime strike aircraft, and fast photo-reconnaissance aircraft. It was also used by the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) as a fast transport to carry small high-value cargoes to, and from, neutral countries, through enemy-controlled airspace. It’s a fact that the B-17 almost never saw its place in history and the defeat of Nazi Germany, as the prototype, known as Model 299, crashed due to pilot error during its evaluation in October 1935. Thankfully, the design had shown such promise during the testing phase, in fact exceeding the requirements of the original specification, that further prototypes were ordered despite boeing losing the original contract with the United States Army Air Corps.

It was this further evaluation that saw the type enter active service in 1938. The actual name ‘Flying Fortress’ was coined by a newspaper hack who witnessed a roll-out of the machine, bristling with guns and turrets, and Boeing realized that this was the sort of propaganda they needed, and trademarked the name. After the initial prototypes, serial production of the B-17 began with the B-17B variant and underwent a major revision with the introduction of the ‘E’. This type featured a substantially redesigned tail and fillet that featured throughout subsequent versions, giving the B-17 its iconic profile. An extra 10ft of length was added to the fuselage. Other refinements included the addition of a tail and dorsal turret, and the addition of a Bendix turret to replace the fixed bathtub type that had graced previous versions. This was found to be disappointing and was eventually replaced with the Sperry ball turret that became a permanent feature of all future marques.

Differences between the E & F versions were mostly changes in nose armament layout, with staggered cheek guns being implemented, and a change in the bombardier’s glass nose, although this would vary occasionally between machines, with a a number of sub-types and adaptations being fitted. Other changes included engine cowls with rounder forward radius, paddle-blade prop blades and strengthened undercarriage the allowed the internal bomb load to double from 4000lb to 8000lb.

The B-17F was powered by 4 x Wright R-1820 “Cyclone” turbocharged radial engines that were constantly uprated over the service life of the B-17, and also carried

11 x .50cal M2 Browning machine guns, with a twelfth being sometimes fitted in the glass nose. A logical solution was to increase the wingspan and replace the two Vultures with four Merlin engines. The engine-installation originally developed by Rolls-Royce for the Beaufighter II, was quickly adapted and fitted in graceful underslung nacelles. The prototype BT308 made its first flight on January 9th, 1941 and it soon proved to be an excellent aircraft with good handling and high load capability. Initially designated Manchester III, it was soon renamed Lancaster. The general outline of the Lancaster remained the same throughout production, apart from the MK II which used Bristol Hercules radial engines, in case a shortage of the Merlin should arise. The Mk I and III were similar, differing only in the type of Merlin engine fitted. In the case of the Mk III, the Packard built Merlin 28 was utilised. The Lancaster began to equip bomber squadrons in early 1942, where it quickly became the backbone of RAF Bomber Command.

The type was used in many famous raids, such as on the M.A.N. factory in Augsburg, the spectacular Dambusters Raid on the Ruhr Valley dams, and sinking the “Tirpitz” to name but a few. It became famous for its use in high accuracy bombing operations by 617 squadron. Its 33-foot-long bomb bay enabled it to carry high loads as well as the spinning “Upkeep” mine used to break the Ruhr dams. Specially adapted aircraft could carry the massive 12.000 lb. “Tallboy” and 22.000 lb. “Grand Slam” earthquake bombs. At the end of the war it was also used for food dropping sorties for the starving Dutch population and transporting the many prisoners of war back home from Germany. Postwar Lancasters were used for testing jet engines and in-flight refueling system. As a bomber it was gradually replaced, but it found a useful role in Coastal Command until the last one was withdrawn in October 1956. The RCAF and French l’Aéronavale, however, continued to use the Lancaster until the mid-sixties. A total of 7,377 Lancasters were built in the UK and Canada

Requires glue, paint, and tools to complete.

Was there any aircraft as unorthodox and unconventional in appearance as the Do 335? Of course there was, but the Do 335 was to be a mass-produced fighter-bomber aircraft that would have entered regular service. What made this aircraft an interesting proposition was its configuration. This was indeed a two-engine design, but centred around an unusual push-pull design. That in itself might make the aircraft sound like a non-starte, but the Do 335 was arguably one of, or THE fastest piston-engine aircraft that ever saw service, as the design eliminated the traditional parasitic drag element that was typical for a standard two-engine design layout.

It was also very versatile. Conceived from the outset as a multirole machine, this adaptable design could be used as a straight fighter aircraft, and also as a night-fighter, complete with a second, tandem crew position that gave that version of the Do 335 its distinctive humpback appearance. Bombs could also be carried in an internal bay, and if you required a heavy fighter, then this was possible by mounting two MK103 cannon in two wing-mounted pods that protruded from the wing leading edge(HK Models kit #01E07).

The Do 335 was also a robust and highly manoeuvrable machine, and one that could actually cope with a rear engine failure. It was also one of the few aircraft of the time

that was fitted with an ejection seat. Should this need to be used, the canopy, rear propeller and upper tail fin would be blasted away by the use of explosive bolts, preventing the pilot from striking them on his way out. Another unusual feature of this aircraft was the cruciform tail layout. A downward pointing fin was included, which would hopefully negate any possible rear propeller damage that could result from an awkward landing. First flown in 1943, the project wasn't without its problems. Whilst the aircraft was in herently stable on both ground and in the air, due to the rear engine resting behind the centre of gravity, it did suffer from some technical issues that were never overcome, such as a weak undercarriage. Despite the great hopes that the Nazis had for the Do 335, like many of their wonder designs, it simply came too late to make any difference, with only 37 being built by the war's end. Allies evaluation of this Do 335'Pfeil'showed that it was an excellent performer and could have been a serious opponent, had it not been for Germany's lack of production capability and onerous bureaucratic and personal in-fighting. The subject of this kit release are the proposed A-10 2Seat trainer variant, and the prototype that had been completed under the US custody after the end of World Wall II.

The Boeing B-17 ‘Flying Fortress’ was one of the U.S.A.’s main four-engine heavy bombers, operating alongside the B-24 Liberator, and the later B-29 Superfortress, in all theatres of World War 2. The actual name ‘Flying Fortress’ was coined by a newspaper hack who witnessed a roll-out of the machine, bristling with guns and turrets, and Boeing realised that this was the sort of propaganda they needed, and trademarked the name. After the initial prototypes, serial production of the B-17 began with the B-17B variant, and underwent a major revision with the introduction of the ‘E’. This was found to be disappointing, and was eventually replaced with the Sperry ball turret that became a permanent feature of all future marques.

HONG KONG
