Fossilised remains were discovered in Katsuyama City in Fukui, Japan, an area renowned for its fossil finds. It was the first dinosaur in Japan to have a fully reconstructed skeleton, and in 2003 it was given the species name Fukuisaurus tetoriensis: the former means “lizard of Fukui” and the latter refers to the Tetori Group, in whose Kitadani formation the fossilized remains were found. Fukuisaurus is believed to have grown to 5.2 meters in length and been able to move on two or four legs as needed.
