he medium-range bomber role proved to be one of the most crucial during World War II, and after a somewhat challenging entry into service, the North American B-25 Mitchell developed into a highly successful aircraft. Operating in every theater of operations, the B-25 was the most versatile aircraft of its type, fulfilling a variety of tactical roles in many different operational environments.
Perhaps the most famous action of the North American B-25 Mitchell occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on April 18, 1942, when sixteen of the bombers took off from the relatively short deck of the USS Hornet and headed for Japan.
This bold and heroic attack was intended as a blow to the heart of the Japanese Empire, which had attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, and illustrated the resolve of the American people and the determination of its forces to strive for victory.
The early B-25B aircraft used in the Doolittle Raid performed well, but had already been modernized.
