The twin-engine B-26 medium bomber, manufactured by the Glenn L. Martin Company, was designed and built in 1939 to meet the requirements of the U.S. Army Air Corps as a new high-speed medium bomber.

The project was originally designated Model 179. Production of the aircraft began without the usual prototype or pre-production phase.

The first B-26 flew on November 25, 1940, and was accepted into service with the U.S. Army Air Force in February 1941. Structurally, the B-26 Marauder was a high-wing monoplane with a spacious fuselage and a crew of five (up to seven in later versions). The bomber's design was constantly modified to improve its flight and combat characteristics. From 1943 onward, the wing area and tail were increased, and the aircraft remained in production with these modifications until the end of its service life.
