Description

The S.M.79 Sparviero was developed as a civil aircraft in the 1930s by the Italian company Savoia-Marchetti and set important world speed records at the time.
It featured its typical three-engine low-wing monoplane configuration and had a structure made of wood, canvas and metal.
It was later configured for military purposes and used extensively by the Regia Aeronautica (Royal Italian Air Force) during World War II, particularly in the Mediterranean as a land bomber and later as an effective torpedo bomber.
Recognizable by the "hump" behind the cockpit, its three 750 hp Alfa Romeo 126 RC34 radial engines reached a top speed of 430 km/h.
Although replaced as a bomber by other, more modern aircraft, the "Sparviero" (Sparrowhawk), in the hands of skilled crews, achieved significant success in torpedo attacks on enemy ships throughout the conflict.
