The introduction of the Macchi MC 202 Folgore was a significant development for the fighter squadrons of the Italian Regia Aeronautica. It featured an elegant aerodynamic design and was powered by the powerful German DB 601 engine, manufactured under license by the Italian aviation industry. Thanks to the engine and its overall flight performance, the Regia Aeronautica had a fighter capable of actively engaging Allied fighters. Flight performance was even significantly better than the previous generation of radial-engined fighters, such as the Fiat G-50 and the Macchi MC-200. The maneuverable and fast aircraft (it reached a speed of 600 km/h) was armed in early versions with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns mounted in the nose. Only in later versions was the armament enhanced with additional machine guns in the wings.
