The 1944 M4A3(75)W Sherman was an American medium tank equipped with a 75mm gun, a Ford V8 gasoline engine, and improved ammunition storage. It combined the proven armament of earlier Sherman variants with a redesigned hull and enhanced crew safety.

  • M4: The base model of the American Sherman tank family.
  • A3: Variant featuring a Ford GAA V8 gasoline engine and a welded upper hull.
  • (75): Armed with the 75mm M3 gun.
  • W: "Wet Stowage" – a system using liquid-filled protective jackets for ammunition storage to reduce the risk of fire if the tank is hit.

The new hull design featured a largely continuous, sloped front plate and larger hatches for the driver and co-driver. The standard 75mm turret also included a dedicated hatch for the loader.
A particularly significant feature was the lower placement of the ammunition: 100 of the 104 rounds were stored in liquid-jacketed containers on the floor of the hull, with an additional four rounds kept in a ready-use rack. The shells themselves were not submerged directly in water; rather, the liquid was contained within the protective jackets of the storage bins.

In Europe, the variant was distributed later in 1944 as a replacement and reinforcement vehicle.
