NASA started Space Shuttle development in 1972, with the mission to create a reusable spacecraft that would connect Earth to its orbit. Starting with Space Shuttle Columbia in 1981, to the retirement in 2011, a total of 135 Space Shuttle launches were completed. Missions ranged from science experiments in built-in space laboratory to long-lasting contributions to building the International Space Station (ISS) by delivering and installing the space station's modular components, delivering and repairing space telescope and numerous satellite emissions. Atlantis delivered Magellan's Venus probe in May 1989, delivered Galileo's Jupiter probe in October 1989, and participated in the International Space Station assembly and resupply missions in 2000. The finished model is 373 mm long and 238 mm wide.
